Grit N’ Grind for Memphis Day is October 27th, and focuses on the rebuilding of the decrepit areas of downtown Memphis. Memphis is the largest city in Tennessee, and is situated on the Mississippi River in the southwestern corner of the state. Memphis is one of the principal wholesale and retail cities in the South, and its economic influences extends into neighboring states. Memphis is also the fourth cheapest city to live in according to a study done by the Kiplinger financial company in May of 2014. While there may be many upsides to settling down in Memphis, there are also many downsides. Memphis is the most dangerous city in all of Tennessee, with residents having a 1 in 57 chance of being victimized by a violent crime and a 1 in 16 chance of being the casualty of property theft. These frightening statistics do not fairly reflect all Memphians, but rather show how dangerous the poor urban areas of downtown Memphis are. Many poor citizens of Memphis are driven to a life of crime to try to improve their livelihood and the lives of their families. If we can focus on helping to improve the poor areas of Memphis, we will also help to lower the violence and crime that occurs. With Grit N’ Grind for Memphis Day, we at Cowls Improvement Association are teaming up with the local NBA team, the Memphis Grizzlies, on October 27th, to help rebuild destroyed homes, neglected buildings, and underfunded schools. We also encourage all those who are willing and able to come out and help, while also getting the possibility to meet some of the Grizzlies players.
